“Perhaps it is music that will change the world.” ~ Shinichi Suzuki
What is Music Therapy?
Music therapy is an allied health profession and is the practice of using musical interventions to help support development in socialization, communication, emotional regulation, gross and fine motor skills and cognitive awareness, as well as provide an outlet for expression and creativity. Music therapy can also help reduce anxiety, build self-esteem, support attention control and stimulate the brain and body among other things.
Additional Information
Throughout years of research, music therapy has been evidenced to help individuals in a variety of ways. Through specified treatment and desired goals, music therapy can help an individual improve cognitive skills, communication, socialization, and behavioral changes. Music therapy can service those with the following diagnoses:
Down Syndrome
Autism
Cerebral Palsy
ADHD
Other pervasive developmental disorders
Dementia
Parkinson’s Disease
Huntington’s Disease
Other degenerative diseases
Traumatic Brain Injuries
What are Adapted Lessons?
Adapted music lessons are approached differently than music therapy. Music lessons center more around instructional learning with a focus on one instrument. As a music teacher, I provide lessons for neurotypical & neurodivergant students. However, some children have learning barriers that require a more creative approach. Adapted lessons allow children to learn an instrument with respect to their sensory & cognitive needs.
What are Traditional Lessons?
Traditional lessons are for neurotypical children and teenagers. Lessons are primarily given in violin through the Suzuki Violin Method, and piano through various method books. Guitar lessons can also be provided.
